Frequently Asked Questions
Are you accepting new students?
Yes! New students are always welcome and can start at any time.
Unlike some registered programs where you sign up for a particular day and time for a set number of weeks, our gym runs continuously year-round. Members reserve their preferred classes on a weekly basis, and this allows new students to jump right in whenever they’re ready!
Can I try a couple of classes to see if I like it?
Absolutely! We know that starting something new can be a big decision and we want you to feel comfortable. We also know that once you try our classes you’ll leave excited to come back! That’s why we offer a Free Trial Membership that gives you two classes on us. Just sign up for it here, then reserve your preferred classes from the calendar.
I loved my free trial and want to sign up! What are my membership options?
Please visit our Memberships page to see full details of all your options, including monthly memberships, punch passes, and drop-in rates. You can purchase them through our Store, Members’ Site, or the RhinoFit app.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes! We offer private lessons for one or two people, or for larger groups. Please click here for more information.
Can I stay and watch my child’s class?
Parents/guardians and siblings are more than welcome to stay for the class. There is bench seating available for spectators; please silence your phones and remove your shoes upon entry.
Do you have classes for teenagers?
Youth 13 years old and up are welcome to attend any of our adult classes, if their maturity and comfort levels make that a good fit. Please feel free to try out a class or two with our Free Trial Membership, or come by the gym during class times to take a look.
I have no experience, is that ok?
Definitely! Absolutely no experience is required, and all of our classes are open to beginners. It doesn’t matter what your fitness level or background is, there’s a place for you at Eight Days Martial Arts. We will help you reach your personal goals while having a great time.
In martial arts, training together with students of all levels is a long-standing tradition. It benefits both new and experienced practitioners by fostering a collaborative learning environment.
For new students, training alongside experienced members provides a chance to observe advanced techniques, get tips, and learn through partner drills. More experienced students, in turn, reinforce their own skills by helping others and solidifying the fundamentals.
This dynamic encourages mutual growth, promotes teamwork, and strengthens our community. Everyone plays a role in each other’s development!
Our coaches will help you pair up with an appropriate partner when you're starting out to ensure you're comfortable and supported.
What is BJJ, Muay Thai, and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu?
Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) are both combat sports with distinct focuses. Muay Thai, known as "The Art of 8 Limbs," is a striking art that uses fists, elbows, knees, and shins. BJJ, on the other hand, is a grappling art that emphasizes take-downs, sweeps, joint locks, and chokes. In BJJ, practitioners wear a “Gi,” the traditional uniform, while No-Gi Jiu Jitsu is practiced in regular athletic wear (similar to what you see in MMA). All of these martial arts are not only effective for self-defense but also for building confidence, fitness, body awareness, and focus. For more details, please visit our Classes page.
What should I wear?
No special attire or equipment is required when you’re starting out. We recommend kids attend in regular gym clothes, such as a t-shirt and shorts or sweat pants. The same goes for adults, but if you have any tight-fitting compression wear that would be good for Jiu Jitsu classes. To keep everyone safe, please avoid wearing clothing with zippers, snaps, or buttons, and remove your jewelry. All classes are practiced in bare feet and we have a change room with lockers available.
Kids and adults participating in BJJ will want to purchase their own Gi once they start training. We have gis and white belts for sale in our online store.
Most importantly, every student must come to class clean with laundered clothing and trimmed nails.
Do I need any special equipment?
If possible, we recommend kids attending Muay Thai bring their own hand wraps, boxing gloves, and shin guards. If you do not currently have these, don’t worry—we have equipment for you to use at the gym. Everything is fully sanitized between uses.
Adults may also choose to get their own hand wraps and boxing gloves for Muay Thai/Ladies Kickboxing if they wish. Hand wraps are available in town at Walmart and Canadian Tire.
Students participating in BJJ will want to purchase their own gi and possibly rashguards at some point. We have gis, white belts, and rashguards available in our online store.
Participants in our Wrestling Fundamentals class may want to purchase headgear and knee-pads, but they aren't strictly necessary.
How do I pause, change, or cancel my membership?
Please contact us if you’d like to make any adjustments to an existing membership, including changing or upgrading your membership.
If you will be unable to attend classes for an extended period, you may pause your membership. This can be done at any time; simply contact us with the dates for which you’d like your membership to be placed on hold. A hold may be scheduled in advance, but cannot be applied retroactively, so please contact us on, or before, the date you need the hold to begin.
Monthly memberships automatically renew every month on the date of purchase and are not subject to a contracted length. If you need to cancel your membership for any reason, please contact us prior to your next monthly renewal date.
Is there any open gym time?
We have Open Mat on Saturdays from 12 till 2pm. Open Mat is an opportunity to train and roll with anyone you like. There is no instruction or structured class; just drop in during open hours and work on whatever you need to—drill techniques, ask questions, hit the bag, or roll till your heart’s content.
Do you offer Gift Certificates?
Yes we do! Gift Certificates can be customized to suit any need and budget, including private lessons, punch passes, and memberships. Please contact us to arrange your perfect gift.
Are you affiliated with any other gym?
Yes, we are affiliated with Ascension Martial Arts in Port Coquitlam, BC, under head coaches 2nd degree Black Belt Shawn Albrecht and Black Belt Alex Pesusich. With Ascension, we are under the umbrella of Prof. Brian J. Johnson and Northwest Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Seattle, WA. Prof. Brian is a 5th Degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Rigan Machado, David Meyer, and John Will. This affiliation greatly expands the knowledge base, training opportunities, and resources available to our coaches and members.
Eight Days Martial Arts is also an affiliate of Invictus LEO. We offer a 10% discount for First Responders, Law Enforcement, and Military. Nurses also receive 10% off through the Yukon LPN Association.
